When Inspirato Destination Concierge Sarah Doughty and her husband visited the U.S. Virgin Islands in 2016, they were enamored—especially with St. Croix.

“We had thought about moving to an island, and my husband did some research,” Doughty said. “By the time we left, we had signed a year lease for a cottage. We went home, sold all of our stuff, rented out our house, and moved down two months later.”

Doughty has been a standout name in Inspirato’s St. Croix reviews for years. Covering for a friend who was a Destination Concierge and had gone on maternity leave at the time, Doughty caught the attention of Inspirato Hospitality Services Manager Julie Gurski.

Doughty had received several glowing reviews from members, and while Gurski was down checking on properties, she offered Doughty a contract position in June 2017. As of April 2019, she’s now officially a full-time Inspirato employee.

Members love Doughty for her thoughtfulness and tendency to plan surprises. In the past, she’s set up special birthday parties, morning mimosas, Easter eggs hunts for kids, and made them their favorite treats.

“I want to make everyone feel welcome—I treat everyone like I would treat my family,” she said, adding with a laugh that she never tells a member “no.”

One of the best parts of her job, she said, is meeting new people and families every week.

I love seeing people’s faces light up when they walk in the door on arrival day.

For an incredible day on St. Croix, Doughty highly recommends a hike to Jack’s and Isaac’s bays on the island’s east side to catch the sunrise. The trailhead to the bays is right by Point Udall, the easternmost point in the U.S.

Then, to cap off the day, hike to the island’s west end for sunset views and the potential of seeing a “green flash,” a green light caused by the colors of the sinking sun refracting against the atmosphere. (According to local lore, the amount of alcohol imbibed before a sunset boosts the chance to see this phenomenon.)

She also said chartering a boat to Buck Island—offering some of the best snorkeling in the Caribbean—is another can’t-miss activity.

But at the end of the day, one of Doughty’s favorite parts of her job is helping a husband set up little unexpected gifts for his wife.

“When the wife walks in and sees the surprise,” she said, “with the most amazing bouquet of flowers, champagne or her favorite cocktail, birthday dessert or massage therapist waiting … it’s the sweetest moment.”
