Of the many vacation destinations in the Caribbean, St. Croix tends to fly under the radar. That results in certain benefits for savvy travelers, like far fewer crowds filling up the island’s pristine beaches, historic streets, and fantastic restaurants as compared to more well-known destinations. Perhaps that’s why St. Croix—the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands—has become a popular option among Inspirato members, who are greeted by a friendly local concierge at our breathtaking luxury vacation homes.

We were expecting St. Croix to be a bit of a typical touristy Caribbean destination, but we were very pleasantly surprised that that was not the case. There are excellent restaurants, beautiful beaches with very few people, fun hikes, and the ability to simply relax in the expansive villa and grounds—you feel like you're far, far away from home.

Beaches and scuba diving

St. Croix is known for its diverse and abundant sea life—as well as warm water year-round—so a scuba diving excursion is a must on any itinerary. Don’t miss Cane Bay, St. Croix’s most popular diving site, and its undersea wall that plunges 3,200 feet below the surface. At the many other diving spots, keep an eye out for eels, manta rays, lobsters, seahorses, and a seemingly endless array of fish species. If you prefer to stay above water, St. Croix boasts miles of white-sand beaches that are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and activities like kiteboarding and stand-up paddleboarding. Much of the island is protected within national historic parks, including Buck Island Reef National Monument and Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge.

History and culture

Over the course of centuries, St. Croix’s indigenous culture has blended with colonial Spanish, French, and Danish influences, giving the island a uniquely eclectic flavor. The melding of cultures is illustrated in the vibrant architecture throughout the islands’ two main towns, Christiansted and Frederiksted. Be sure to sample local produce and seafood at excellent restaurants like the popular 40 Strand or at one of the farmers’ markets found across St. Croix. Stop by the world-renowned Cruzan rum distillery in Frederiksted for a taste of one of St. Croix’s most popular exports. The friendly locals are known for breeding award-winning racehorses, which can often be found wandering freely along the roads.
