No matter the season, Los Cabos continues to captivate Inspirato Members, especially golfers. On the one hand, there’s the convenience factor: Los Cabos has several easy and direct flights from the continental United States and our club has 18 accommodation options across the entire destination, many with insider perks to secure coveted tee times.

But convenience and ease aside, Los Cabos offers one of the most stunning backdrops for a round of golf. Therein lies the true appeal: mix the desert links style of Arizona with the coastal majesty of Monterey, and you have a setting that is unlike any other in the world.

Taking in to account a few key improvements and additions to the golf scene, there has never been a better time to tee up in Los Cabos. Here’s a quick roundup of our favorite courses.

Palmilla Golf Club

Several of the world’s best golf course architects have laid plans in Los Cabos, but it was Jack Nicklaus — and the Palmilla Golf Club in 1993 — that got the boom going. Take your pick among three 9-hole courses: Mountain, Ocean, and Arroyo. Each course is challenging enough to give even the pros fits, but that’s part of the fun.

Quivira

Quivira Golf Club opened in October 2014 and immediately made its mark on Los Cabos’ golf scene. Once again, it is the handiwork of Jack Nicklaus that makes this wild 18-hole layout truly special. Nicklaus found innovative ways to layer the fairways and greens on top of craggy bluffs and along the sandy shores of the peninsula just west of Cabo San Lucas. The par 3 No. 6 is a real cliffhanger. In fact, the official description refers to one hazard as “oblivion.” That pretty much says it all.

Cabo del Sol (Ocean and Desert Course)

Cabo del Sol golf course

Along with Quivira, Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course is considered the creme de la creme of Los Cabos golf courses. When Golf Digest listed the 500 best holes in the world, they listed two from this single course. The par 4 No. 5 hole is a tricky dogleg that dares long hitters, while the par 3 No. 17 requires a tee shot over an ocean cove. Perhaps lost in the hubbub over the Ocean Course is the majestic Desert Course designed by Tom Weiskopf, which takes full advantage of the Baja Peninsula’s undulating and arid terrain. An added bonus: Cabo del Sol is the closest course to the Inspirato residences at Esperanza.

“Four of us played Cabo del Sol’s Ocean Course, which is about 5-10 minutes away from all the residences. A stunning course that is also challenging, yet playable at the same time. At the turn after the 9th hole, there is a snack bar/kitchen where players get complimentary tacos which were delicious.”

Club Campestre

Jack Nicklaus also designed Club Campestre San Jose. As with any desert links course, you can expect wind and more bunkers than you can count to be a major factor. Hole No. 7 appears to be an oasis … until you realize how much water you have to carry to reach the peninsula green.

Cabo Real

Cabo Real Golf Club offers more than its share of surprises. The front 9 was redesigned by Robert Trent Jones II and the course has hosted a pair of PGA Senior Slams since its opening in 1990s. Of particular note is the par 4 fifth hole, which cascades down a slope toward the beach. Don’t let the breaching and spouting whales behind the green distract you.

Puerto Los Cabos

On the fringes of civilization you will find the wild and wonderfully challenging Puerto Los Cabos. Beyond the course, the unbroken desert of the Baja Peninsula stretches north, flanked by one of the world’s most important marine ecosystems, the Sea of Cortez. It is against this backdrop that two legends of the game combined efforts to create a masterpiece layout of 18 holes. Greg Norman designed the front 9, dubbed the Mission Course, which serves up one amazing ocean vista after another. The back 9 was designed by — you guessed it — Jack Nicklaus, who took a less-is-more approach and allowed nature to define the challenges. As the course slogan says, “Begin with the Shark, Finish with the Bear.” Given the pedigree of these two PGA legends, there are few courses in the world that can serve up such an experience.
