Located on the northwestern side of Hawaii’s Big Island, the Kohala Coast is a legendary vacation hub and a stunning mix of scenery. Immaculate white beaches stretch for miles between blue waves and green rainforests — and, in some places, snow-capped peaks and hardened lava fields. The world’s largest active volcano fumes on the horizon, while beneath the water, unmatched snorkeling can be found amid reefs and wildlife (look for whales from December to May).

Of course, the Kohala Coast is also known for its luxury accommodations, and Inspirato Members have several residences to choose from here. Accommodating as many as eight people, these stunning homes capture the essence of island living with features like private pools, indoor/outdoor space, and views of the ocean or scenic golf courses. Alternatively, stay in a suite or room at Inspirato’s hotel partner, the acclaimed Fairmont Orchid, home to the award-winning Spa Without Walls and Brown’s Beach House restaurant.

There’s a ton to do, so we’ve narrowed it down to the perfect five-day itinerary to help you get started with planning a vacation to this beloved island.

We stayed in a great home - on the ocean with great sunsets, great views (ocean & mountains), outstanding walking trails, fabulous pool and convenient to shops. We had a great time scuba diving, helicopter tour of the erupting Kilauea volcano, a great meal prepared by Chef David Paul Johnson and of course relaxing with family.

Stretch out on the sands at Aneaho’omalu Bay (also called A-Bay). Be sure to look for sea turtles sunbathing on the wide swath of white sand.

Evening

Enjoy dinner at Beach Tree at the Four Seasons with its sophisticated Italian and Mediterranean cuisine. Be sure to arrive early for a sundowner at sunset.

Day Two

Morning

Explore the rainforest on Kohala Zipline’s Zip and Dip. On this multipart adventure, you and your guests will trek through mountains, zip through treetops, and rappel down trees.

Soak in another beach afternoon at Manini’owali Beach. Be sure to bring the boogie board; the waves here are fantastic.

Make like a local and check out the Kona Brewing Company for dinner. Here you will enjoy excellent craft beer and Hawaiian-style pizza – just 15 minutes from your Inspirato Residence.

Day Three

Morning

Jaw-dropping vistas and lush scenery await you at Polulu Valley. Pack a picnic and hike to the valley floor where you can walk along a stunning black sand beach.
